DANVILLE – Danville police are warning the public about a scam that at least one elderly resident has fallen victim to recently, according to Deputy Director Doug Miller with Danville police.
Last week, an 80-year-old Danville woman received a phone call from a man claiming to be an employee of a local financial institution, according to Miller. He told the woman that an employee of the bank had stolen some money from her account, and he needed her help to catch the person. He asked the woman to withdraw a significant amount of cash from her account at the local financial institution, which Miller is not identifying, and meet him at a parking lot of another local business. The elderly woman withdrew cash, met him, gave him the money and he left after telling her that he would meet her at her financial institution on Tuesday to give back her money.
When he didn’t show up on Tuesday, the woman spoke to employees at the financial institution and realized she had been scammed.
Miller said the suspect is a white, male, clean-shaven, nicely dressed, wearing a baseball cap and was very polite, according to the victim. She did not see where he went after he walked away with the money.
Miller said police have encountered this type of scam in the past, although this is the only case police are aware of recently. He said police caution the public that this is someone, who may or may not be local, preying on elderly victims, and if anyone is contacted by such a person who claims to be from a financial institution, they should immediately call the police.
